We’re using GL Assessment’s standardised assessments as a trusted tool to create baseline, mid and end point data for our project. The reliable and robust results from these assessments are viewed by ourselves, and our external evaluators, as one of the best measures of the progress of our SSIF project towards its intended outcomes.Katie North, Project Lead, Abbey Multi Academy Trust
Open to teaching school associations, Multi Academy Trusts and local authorities the £140 million SSIF supports a broad range of school improvement activities including, but not limited to, improving leadership, governance, teaching methods and approaches, and financial health and efficiency.
Applications for SSIF must be provided with supporting evidence and demonstrate tangible impact of how school standards will improve as a result of the investment. This link provides information of some of the core areas of focus for approved projects cross referenced with our assessments and examples of impact. In addition the DfE recently published guidance around how to strengthen new applications and suggested there are clear common themes for how strong applicantions are meeting the four main bid assessment criteria and also some guidance around what made particular applications weaker.
There are more details on the DfE website.
GL Assessment is at the forefront when supporting successful SSIF bid applications as we provide independent measurements of performance that demonstrate impact and evidence of outcomes. We have partnered a range of education providers (LAs, MATs and TSAs) providing independent measures for over 40 Education Endowment Foundation (EEF) research projects. Our assessments establish the baseline data of pupils' attainment, stakeholders’ perceptions and existing barriers to learning. Subsequent project interventions use this baseline data to provide a rigorous measure of improved outcomes and impacts made.
By using GL Assessment standardised assessments you:
To assist in the smooth running of your project, and from experience of working with approved phase one and two projects, we provide a named project support manager, analysis and data interpretation and full training via online presentations or face to face, as required. With standardised tests, we don’t end up with an arbitrary score; the data contains decades’ worth of standardisation so we know it’s reliable.Nigel Ward, Chief Executive, Northern Schools Trust.
Our standardised assessments allow you to quickly identify and analyse the attainment of disadvantaged pupils both at individual, year, school and project group level. The reports highlight the performance of specific groups such as Pupil Premium, Free School Meals (FSM), English as an Additional Language (EAL), gender and Special Education Needs (SEN), providing an easy mechanism to monitor performance and evidence what support might be necessary to positively impact closing the attainment gap
By using standardised assessments, you are provided with a national benchmark which ensures comparability between schools involved in the project and the relevant gaps in attainment against the wider national picture. They will also provide a robust externally validated measures of impact when used at the start and end of the project activity.
For example, Greenwood Academy in Birmingham (a school with 70% FSM) details how they use PASS to address the low aspirations and complex social, emotional and mental health needs of their students. And North Liverpool Academy outline how NGRT helps them identify the reading issues their students have, whether that’s decoding, comprehension or both, and how the digital, adaptive nature of NGRT makes it both accessible and non-threatening for the students who have reading problems.
GL Assessment has supported many SSIF projects, as a key partner in measuring impact and effectiveness. Contact us to learn more about the work we are already doing to support these projects, and how we can help with your application to this new funding stream.
