What kind of training do you offer?
Tell us about who you are and what you do (individual or organisation)
I am proud and fortunate to be the Principal of the International Community School, Amman, the global home of #themonalisaeffect and a hub of excellence in the use of student-level data. In addition, as a user of tools from the GL assessment suite since 2003,I have also worked closely with GL Education for the past five years in relation to product development and training. I have spoken at conferences around the world about how schools can maximise the impact of the full ‘data triangle’ in order to enhance both learning and wellbeing. I have delivered training, both online and in person, to international school Heads and senior leaders across the world, and am constantly exploring new ways to bring the data alive for staff, parents and students alike.
Which GL products are you familiar with and happy to deliver training and support on?
I am intimately familiar with the CAT4, the Progress Test Series and the PASS survey, and I have developed an established expertise in how to triangulate these three datasets better to understand and provide for the needs and strengths of each individual student. I can provide training for all stakeholder groups on how to understand and make the most of this data, and am equally comfortable working with large audiences as I am with individuals.
Where are you located and where would you be willing to train
My school leadership career includes schools in the UK, Europe, South East Asia and the Middle East, and I am currently based in Amman, Jordan. I have also worked with schools in Africa and East Asia, as well as school leaders from South and Central America. Depending on my availability, I am happy, comfortable and confident to work with schools anywhere in the world, although my location does make schools in the Middle East more convenient for training of a shorter length.

I first saw Matthew Savage talking about what he calls The Mona Lisa Effect at a COBIS conference in London. Like so many of my fellow delegates, I was impressed by his energetic eloquence and his humorous insight into the way we use (and often misuse) data in our schools. A few months later I jumped at the opportunity to welcome him to the British School in Tokyo to work with some of our staff and to offer a similar presentation to teachers from international schools across the city; I was delighted with the response. Anyone who can make data interesting and entertaining on a wet Friday afternoon after a long school week deserves respect! Thank you so much for all your help and support. Yesterday went really well. The parents and students all seemed very happy that we were sharing the results of the CAT4 with them – the look on one student’s face when I told her she scored 141 in the quantitative battery was an absolute picture, which will stay with me for a long time. I would never have realised how many exceptionally intelligent students we have without doing the CAT4, and we have also picked up on several students who need support. Matthew was invited to speak at MBIS, in regard to assessment in general and the use of our GL testing results, to enhance the teaching and learning at our school.
The first session “the Mona Lisa Effect” was extremely well received by our own faculty and by other educationalists invited from leading schools in the Pune area. It was enlightening and the relevance to school improvement was clearly presented.
I would recommend Matthew to any school looking at their current use of testing data or considering introducing standardised testing as a means to work towards greater school improvement.
