Using WellComm Primary to support speech and language needs

Scoil Bhríde Buachaillí in Dublin is an early user of WellComm Primary. Deputy Principal, Eiven Shanahan, explains how his school is using WellComm Primary and how it is supporting the speech and language needs of his pupils.

We are using WellComm Primary as a screener with those who appear to be experiencing difficulty with speech, language and/or communication.

WellComm Primary is simple and quick to administer. It’s easy to get to know this assessment and I believe that practitioners can become proficient in the administration very quickly. The instructions are easy to follow and not overly complicated.

Our school population is comprised of 85% EAL and I have found in the past that other assessments are too complicated for some of these children. WellComm Primary is more at their level and gives a truer picture as to where they are with regards to SLCN.

The addition of the online report generator is a major plus. Firstly, it means that the administrator’s job is more or less complete when the raw data has been collected as the WellComm Wizard generates the report. WellComm Primary reports on the outcome, gives recommendations on re-screening and, most importantly, provides the teacher with a bank of ideas and suggestions to support the pupil with SLCN. The report is extremely professional and easily presented to parents or other education professionals.

I think WellComm Primary can be best utilised as that initial step before a subsequent referral. Once a teacher has identified possible needs, they can screen with WellComm Primary, devise a plan using its next steps, implement it and then review.
