Closing the gap: the link between low self-esteem and poor reading attainment

Most teachers will have had to find ways to work with students who have negative attitudes to school and a poor opinion of their own abilities.

This study – a mix of research analysis, real-life examples , and advice from teachers – highlights the link between specific attitudes and reading attainment. It will help any teacher identify and then support those students who do not see the point of learning or how any interventions are supposed to benefit them.

It looks at:

  • The impact of negative attitudes to learning
  • Whether there is any gender or age variation
  • How negative attitudes can be readily identified
  • What measures teachers can take to tackle low learner self-esteem
