Cognitive Abilities Test: Fourth Edition (CAT4)

The Cognitive Abilities Test: Fourth Edition is the most widely used test of reasoning ability in the UK and is used in leading international schools around the globe.

The assessment has now been standardised against the Indian CBSE curriculum, to provide indicators of likely outcomes at Grade X and XII as of 2019.

Results from CAT4 help schools to identify gifted and talented students; those who may be under-achieving, as well as those who may have unrecognised special educational needs (SEN). The individual learner profile supports schools that wish to offer a more innovative and personalised teaching approach. For example, students with a spatial bias are likely to do well in the STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematical) subjects but will need support to keep developing their verbal skills.

CAT4 is often used to create a baseline as students enter the secondary years and the indicators support planning and target setting for individuals and the whole school as well as providing a sound foundation for continual assessment.

How to use the data:

  • Identify gifted and talented students or those needing learning support
  • Personalise teaching and learning
  • Set realistic but challenging targets
  • Establish a reliable benchmark
  • Support admissions processes
  • Evaluate value added
